The downloader was dead. The data wasn't.

There was an app I'd been trying to pull a full archive out of for months. The official downloader wasn't broken. It was just cumbersome. There was something I wanted out of it and I couldn't get to it. I tried a few times, hit the same wall every time, and parked it. Yesterday I told my agent to figure it out. Twenty minutes later it sent me back 700 files.

The whole prompt

I didn't outline what to try. I didn't tell it which library to use. I said: "Hey, there's an app. I need to get images off of it. It's cumbersome. Can you just go on there and download it?"

Twenty minutes later it sent me back 700 files. The full archive. Photos, videos, the works. About 300 megabytes that I'd written off.

What it actually did

The agent didn't just hammer the broken endpoint. It logged into the site like a normal person, paged through every screen, watched what URLs the browser was actually pulling. It noticed the site was using signed, expiring URLs for the big files. Caught the first pull failing because of that. Adjusted. Captured the live signed links inside their expiry window. Then it pulled everything down.

That's pentest behaviour. Map the system. Find the path that the front door uses. Replay it from outside. I would have done it the same way if I'd sat down to do it. The difference is I never did sit down to do it, because it was the kind of task that would eat my Saturday and I always picked something else.

The agent doesn't need a Saturday. It just runs.

What I want you to take from this

If you've got a thing you've been avoiding for months because the official tool is broken and the manual workaround is two days of clicking, that's a task for an agent. Not a chatbot. Not "ask an AI for advice." An actual agent on an actual machine that can log in, navigate, capture, retry, and ship you the file.

This is the difference between AI as a thing you ask questions to, and AI as a thing that does the work.

The first one is useful. The second one is what changes your life.

I have files back that I'd more or less accepted I wasn't getting back. I missed out on these the last time around. Now I won't miss out on things like this again. That's a small thing in the scale of what AI is supposed to do this decade. It's also, in the only scale that matters to me right now, not a small thing at all.

What this means for the work I do for customers

Most of you reading this are running a business with some pile of trapped data. An old POS export. A vendor portal that stopped working when they upgraded. An email account from someone who left and whose archive is half extractable. A photo library that's been migrated three times and nobody can find the originals anymore.

That stuff is recoverable. Not by a script that you write next month. By an agent you point at the problem this week.
