Mark Cuban's boring business rules still win
A billionaire sat down for 91 minutes and the best advice was the boring stuff. Sell. Get great at one thing. Make a profit. Hire your opposite. Be nice.
Sales is helping
Cuban started selling garbage bags door to door at 12. He says no business has ever worked without sales.
His rule is simple. You care. You know your product. You're not talking someone into something against their interest. You're finding out what they need and helping them get it.
That's how I want to sell. I'd rather tell you straight than sell you a contract you don't need.
Get great at one thing
People come to him with three ideas, thinking it improves their odds. He says that's ridiculous. Find one thing and be great at it, because doors open when you're great.
And you get great at where you spend your time, not at what you're passionate about. He was passionate about baseball. Didn't help.
My one thing is setting up AI agents around the work a small business actually does. That's it.
Make a profit every month
His first company, MicroSolutions, made a profit every single month for 8 years. No big raise. Sell enough, keep costs in line, stay alive.
He thinks young founders chase big sales numbers and investor money when the real path is the person who makes a few million, not the billionaire. There are way more of those.
We built our pricing the same way. Clients own their AI usage and billing, so nothing we set up leaves a surprise bill running in the background.
Hire your opposite
Cuban calls himself ready, fire, aim. He's awful at details and says he's awful at hiring. So every company he built had a partner who was great at exactly that.
Some of my detail people are agents. My bookkeeping agent matches every receipt to every transaction and tells me what's missing. It never gets bored of it. I would.
Be nice
He used to yell and scream at MicroSolutions. His partner told him people were afraid of him and it was hurting the business. He changed. He says he got a lot further being nice.
None of this is new. That's the point. The tools change every week. The rules don't.
Want AI set up around the work you actually do, with no surprise bills? Let's talk.
